Citronella is a tall fragrant perennial grass which can grow up to a height of 1-1.5m (3-5ft) with dense leaves growing from a stout rhizome. The simple, green long leaves can grow to an average length of 60cm (2ft) long.
The citronella plant is pleasant smelling and its fragrance is used in perfumery and soap making. The plant is also a mosquito repellent and when added to cedarwood essential oil, has long lasting effects.
Citronella oil, which is extracted from the leaves, is often used as a massage oil (mixed in with a carried oil), to reduce joint and muscle pains. Its pleasant aroma makes it a popular aromatherapy treatment, where it is used as antidepressant, to stimulate mental activity and reduce anxiety.
